Best Time to Visit Punta Cana: Weather and Seasons Month by Month
Dry and busy from December to April, hotter and quieter in summer, with hurricane season from June to November. How to pick the right month for your trip.

In this article
The best time to visit Punta Cana for dry, sunny weather is December to April, the high season. It is also the busiest and most expensive period. For lower prices and fewer people, consider the shoulder months of May and November, and keep in mind that the Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November.
The good news is that Punta Cana is warm all year. Daytime temperatures typically sit around 25 to 31 °C (high 70s to high 80s °F), and the sea stays pleasant for swimming in every month. What changes through the year is humidity, rain, crowds and what is happening around the country.
Punta Cana weather through the year
The Dominican Republic has a tropical climate with two broad seasons rather than four.
- Dry season (roughly December to April): lower humidity, steady trade winds, mostly sunny days and cooler evenings. This is the most comfortable weather of the year.
- Wet season (roughly May to November): hotter and more humid, with more frequent rain. On the coast, rain usually comes as short, heavy showers, often in the afternoon, followed by sunshine.
A forecast showing rain every day does not mean a week indoors. In most cases it means a passing shower. Plan outdoor excursions for the morning when you can, and keep a light rain jacket in your bag.
Two things stay constant all year: the sun is strong even on cloudy days, so high-SPF sunscreen and a hat are essential, and the trade winds keep the coast more comfortable than inland towns. If you plan a day trip to Santo Domingo or the mountains, expect it to feel hotter or wetter than the beach.

Hurricane season: what it really means
The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from 1 June to 30 November, with the most activity usually between August and October. Most weeks in this period pass without any storm affecting Punta Cana, and many travelers enjoy lower prices and emptier beaches. Still, a storm can disrupt flights and plans for a few days.
If you travel in these months:
- Buy travel insurance that covers weather-related cancellations and delays, and read what it excludes.
- Choose flexible hotel and flight rates where possible.
- Book services with clear cancellation terms. Many private transfers, including ours, can be cancelled free of charge up to 24 hours before pickup.
- Follow official forecasts in the days before departure, and listen to your hotel’s guidance if a storm approaches.
Seasonal events worth planning around
Humpback whales in Samaná
From roughly mid-January to March, humpback whales gather in Samaná Bay to mate and give birth. Whale-watching boats leave from Samaná, a long day trip from Punta Cana, so plan an early start. Our guide to Samaná and the whale season from Punta Cana explains how the day works.
Carnival and Independence Day
Dominican Carnival fills February, with parades of colorful costumes and masks on Sunday afternoons in many towns, and the biggest celebrations in cities such as La Vega and Santo Domingo. Independence Day, 27 February, is a national holiday and often coincides with major Carnival events.
Semana Santa (Easter week)
Easter week, in March or April depending on the year, is one of the busiest times on Dominican beaches. Many locals travel to the coast, so public beaches, roads and restaurants fill up. Book early and expect more traffic.
Christmas and New Year
The second half of December and the first days of January are the peak of the peak. Hotels sell out, flights are full and prices are at their highest. If you want these dates, reserve months ahead.
Which season suits you
- Best weather: January to March, when it is dry and breezy.
- Best value: May, June and November, outside the main holiday dates.
- Fewest people: September and October, if you accept a higher chance of rain and storms.
- Families on school holidays: July and August work well with flexible bookings and insurance.
- Beach lovers: any month. Compare where to swim in our guide to the best beaches in Punta Cana, and note that sargassum varies by year and beach, so check local reports before you go.
Whatever the month, arriving relaxed makes a difference. A private airport transfer with flight tracking means your driver adjusts if your flight lands early or late.
